GERMANY
National Recycling Organisation

DKR

The DKR is one of the guarantors of Duales System Deutschland AG, which issues licences allowing companies to display the Green Dot on their sales packaging. As a guarantor, the DKR ensures that used plastic packaging is recycled in an ecologically and economically sound manner as prescribed by the Packaging Ordinance. The DKR is the sole guarantor for plastic sales packaging.

Each year, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kunststoff-Recycling mbH (DKR) forwards around 600,000 tonnes of used plastic packaging marked with the Green Dot for recycling.

In cooperation with its partner companies, the DKR has been developing ecologically sound recycling processes and building up the corresponding infrastructure since 1993. Today, plastics recycling is no longer a question of capacity.

Having achieved reliable recycling, the DKR is now setting itself a new goal: Eco-efficiency - a combination of economy and ecology. Now the goal is to market recycled products successfully, to make process techniques more efficient and to develop new processes. In order to achieve this aim without cutting back on ecological aspects, the DKR is increasingly focusing on research and development.

The Cologne-based company cooperates with approximately 50 companies in Germany and abroad that prepare and recycle plastic packaging materials. The DKR was founded on July 28, 1993 and now employs around 70 people. The DKR shareholders are Duales System Deutschland AG with a 49.6% share of and Beteiligungs- und Kunststoffbewertungsgesellschaft mbH (BKV), an amalgamation of companies from the plastics industry, with 50.4%.

The DKR is also committed to the arts. Since 1995, the Cologne company has been supporting the work of the internationally recognised design artists Beata and Gerhard Bär and Hartmut Knell. Their medium - plastic packaging marked with the Green Dot. Their aim is to make unique objects in series - from sofas to standing lamps - and, in doing so, to hold a mirror up to the consumer society.

RIGK GmbH

In 1991, in order to reduce the volume of waste and to save resources, the German Packaging Ordinance came into effect. It obliges producers and distributors of packaging to take back used empty packaging from January 1, 1993. In 1998, the Ordinance was amended.

According to section 11 of the Packaging Directive, producers and distributors are permitted to commission a so-called "third party" to fulfil their obligations regarding the recovery of empty used plastic packaging.

RIGK offers following return systems to take back plastic packaging from industrial waste producers:

  • the RIGK-SYSTEM for returning industrial and commercial packaging containing non-hazardous substances
  • the RIGK-G-SYSTEM for returning industrial and commercial packaging containing hazardous substances
  • the PAMIRA-SYSTEM for returning packaging from agricultural pesticide.
