DKR finalises playground project

In April 2005 the DKR finalised the project to promote the marketing of plastic recycling products for equipping playgrounds. In the city of Geesthacht near Hamburg the first playground of which the key components were manufactured from recycled plastic packaging was given the name "Konfetti-playground". The name refers to the multi-coloured surfaces of the components, especially to the motley sheets made from plastic bottle grinding stock. On the occasion of the naming Mr Meinhard Füllner inaugurated a new plank bridge made from recycled plastic waste. Mr Füllner is Chairman of the County Council of the County Dukedom Lauenburg. The celebration was part of the "Day of the Safe Playground"; the action day of the Deutsches Grünes Kreuz (DGK, German Green Cross) organised under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Mrs Renate Schmidt. The DGK is the oldest non-profit association for the advancement of health care and communication in Germany.

Most of the components of the playground are made from recycled plastic packaging. The long-lasting and robust material reduces maintenance costs and is safer than conventional wood products in terms of injury risks. The project has been successful in reducing reservations many municipal decision-makers have against plastic and introducing the material as cost-saving alternative of lumber. The opening of markets for products from recycled plastics will have an effect on the further reduction of recycling costs.

The DKR supported the „Konfetti-Spielplatz" which had been built in co-operation with the city of Geesthacht in 2003. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from the media and municipalities the DKR intensified communication on the material advantages of plastic in comparison with customary lumber in 2004. With the naming of the playground and a newly released brochure titled "Play fun with recycled plastics" the project now has come to an end. In the brochure, planners, architects and municipal decision-makers will find numerous product examples made from recycled plastic packaging. A product and manufacturers list rounds off the publication.

(The brochure is available in German and can be ordered under www.dkr.de.)
